Where WWII Resistance Meets Romance

Welcome to my author website!

I’m Hannah Byron, and I write heroine-journey fiction — stories of WWII resistance women that aren’t just about what happened, but about what it felt like. My books weave history with raw emotion, so that readers don’t only read about courage, but actually experience it.

I wasn’t always a full-time author. For years, I juggled life as a professor, translator, and mum. Then loss and reinvention pushed me to return to writing with a clear mission: to tell stories that make people braver, more hopeful, more alive.

These women of the past are my teachers — fierce, flawed, resilient — and their journeys inspire everything I put on the page. Readers tell me my books have changed the way they see themselves, and that is the greatest honour I could imagine as a writer.

When I’m not at my desk, you’ll find me walking, scribbling poems, sipping tea, or spoiling my granddaughters. And sometimes, I like to stir in a little mischief, because life — like fiction — should be unforgettable.

Welcome to my world!

The Ace of Nerve

Codename Hélène

Timeless Spies is both a literary endeavor and a passion project, dedicated to immortalizing the legacy of the 40 female secret agents of the SOE in France during WWII.

The Ace of Nerve cover

The Ace of Nerve: Codename Hélène, book 4 in the Timeless Spies series, is inspired by the real-life story of Nancy Wake—the White Mouse of the French Resistance—this dual timeline novel traces the untold legacy of one of WWII’s most formidable heroines.

London, 2010
Aroha Tui has always walked between worlds: modern-day Britain and her Māori royal lineage; the quiet halls of a veterans' home and the fire of a spirit she’s trying to ignore. When she's assigned to care for Nancy Wake—once the most wanted woman in Nazi-occupied France—she expects a recluse. What she finds is a challenge.

Sharp-tongued, whiskey-fueled, and still brimming with defiance, Nancy offers Aroha a deal: find the long-lost war medals she claims were stolen, and she’ll tell her story—one of sabotage, survival, and sacrifice.

Drawn in by Nancy’s contradictions, Aroha enlists the help of Jules, a young Frenchman whose grandfather once fought alongside Nancy in the Maquis. As the past resurfaces, so do long-buried secrets, including a love that never fully died… and a betrayal that shaped everything.

From pre-war Marseille to the chaos of occupied France, The Ace of Nerve: Codename Hélène is a sweeping tale of female resistance, intergenerational memory, and the unfinished battles of identity, honor, and love.
